Training opportunity - The Dynamics of Attachment in Adult Life
York Women's Counselling Service is delighted to announce a one day training event on Saturday 26 October 2024 with experienced therapist, academic, researcher and teacher, Dr Una McCluskey.
Una is internationally renowned for her work in the attachment field and will present her approach and its use in therapeutic work.
Building on the work of John Bowlby and others and grounded in her own extensive research and professional practice, Una has developed a model for exploring the dynamics of attachment in adult life called Exploratory Goal-Corrected Psychotherapy (EGCP).
Una’s research on the therapeutic process showed that the offer to treat triggered dynamics of attachment in both the therapist (as ‘caregiver’) and the client (as ‘careseeker’), a finding which shaped the development of EGCP as an effective psychotherapeutic / counselling practice centred on a ‘dynamic, interactive and instinctive goal-corrected process’.
The EGCP methodology enables the therapist to provide an exploratory space where the client can:
Identify the different aspects of themselves that are triggered in the here and now and
Interact with these aspects in such a way that the person experiences relief, becomes curious and is able to access their inbuilt capacity for attaining or retrieving competence and confidence.
The approach is centred on the ‘caregiver’ remaining exploratory and non-defensive and using the model to guide their attunement to the ‘careseeker’ and their interventions.
Una will present the EGCP model and how it is used in therapeutic work. She will use video and clinical examples to demonstrate the use of the model in professional practice and provide small group opportunities for developing skills. She will also explore the application of the model in a range of practice settings.
Learning Objectives
To develop an understanding of the EGCP model as an effective psychotherapeutic/ counselling practice centred on a ‘dynamic, interaction and instinctive goal-corrected process’
To increase awareness of the way in which dynamics of attachment interact and are visible in the therapeutic process
To develop skills as a professional ‘caregiver’/therapist in promoting exploration of the dynamics of attachment and their impact on the client and their development.
The training will be held in person in York on Saturday 26 October 2024 10 am - 4.30pm.
The training costs £75 and is suitable for counsellors, social workers, psychologists and psychotherapists. It represents 6 hours of CPD training.
Coffee/tea/soft drinks and light refreshments are included but not lunch. Participants can bring their own, or purchase from or visit one of the many cafes and restaurants nearby. The lunch break will be long enough to enable this.
